New cage for Javaan Leaf monkeys
August 9, 2009The old cages for the Javaan Leaf monkeys (Lutungs) were not appropriate for their way of living. Normally the Lutungs spend ninety percent of their time in high trees, but because these Lutungs have lived in captivity, they have developed a different way of living and spend a lot of time on the ground. We assume that the consequence of this is that they are much more in contact with bacteria and fungus and might have caused a lot of illnes and even some of their deaths. That’s the reason why we decided to create a new cage for them. We have connected two existing cages and made them totally suitable for the living environment of the Lutungs. The cages are so big that we can place a lot more Lutungs together and create a whole new group of them. Eventually we want to release those groups in the wild.
