Animal Story’s

On this page you find a few story’s of the Animals PPSC give’s a home to.

Gugung the Leopard.

On April 2005 Cikananga received a badly injured of Javan black leopard (Phantera pardus) from the team of Forestry Policeman of Garut. The officer said that he confiscated this animal from the villagers of Ceremai Mountain in Garut, West Java to give him protection and care.
The leopard had lost his home in the forest (because of wood-cutters) and it started to come down to the villager farm to get their food. The people of the village started to put traps in the forest and around the village to catch the leopard that came to the village. This with success! The leopard they cached was badly injured on his leg because of the trap! They head of the village decided to keep the animal as a pet and housed it very bad, the pore leopard was in a lot of pain and very frighten. Happily the forestry police find this out and confiscated the animal.
Arriving at Cikananga, the leopard called GUGUN, needed immediately medical treatment because of the bad condition he was in and unfortunately he needed an operation for amputating the leg. Cikananga medical team had successfully run the operation and Gugun is now healthy and occupying one of the large pens of Carnivore block at the Center. Gugun will be impossible to released to the wild for his a physical disability. He will not be able to compete with other wild animals in the natural habitat. Therefore, Cikananga provides a home in the Sanctuary and nursed well.

Noni and Dodo the Orang-Utans:

Many dream about having a pet Orang-Utan (pongo pygmaeus). The most adorable and intelligent creatures of the forest. But that adorable abruptly stops once they hit puberty. They then can become quite a nuisance and a handful, after all apes weren’t made to keep indoors.
A wealthy couple in Bogor found out what a nuisance two teenage Orang-Utans can be. The two Orang-Utans, Noni (female) and Dodo (male) were bought on the black market when they were just little, and the family raised them if they were two children. After years they hit puberty and became too big to handle. The owner built a cage in the backyard, but understood that this wasn’t the most ideal situation for the two. After deliberation he called Cikananga foundation to ask whether we could take care of Noni and Dodo. Of course we did!
When they came in to PPSC they where not in the best condition, the owner did his best to give them good care, but this was not very succeeded. Now Noni and Dodo are very lively, kind and joyful animals, with great personalities and in very healthy condition again. They are very dear to me.
We will seek the best and natural place for the animals. Noni and Dodo really do need and deserve a good place to live, and that is the reason for me to do this job.

Dompoe and Jollie:

The story of Dompoe and Jollie is a sad one. They are two Javan Gibbon females (also known as Silvery Gibbons) (Hylobates moloch). The Javan gibbon is one of the rarest species of Gibbons because they are restricted to the western half of the densely populated island of Java. They are badly losing the competition with humans for space and resources to live.

We took the two on November 15th 2009 from the village of Lengkong. This area is infamous for the number of gibbons held in captivity. Near Lengkong there used to be a Nature Reserve, where the apes could roam freely. Unfortunately their entire reserve has disappeared through illegal logging, leaving the animals with minimal changes of survival and exposed to poachers. Poaching is what happened to Dompoe and Jollie; their parents were killed and both of them were taken and sold to two different families in the village.
Dompoe is 5 years old and spent almost all her live in captivity. Jollie is about 2 years old. Both had terrible accommodations at the owners. Dompoe was locked away in a small cage attached to a chain and Jollie was attached to a chain with only a little box for shelter.
It is awful to know that both lacked parental care. Gibbons normally stay with their parent for 4-5 years, of which the First few years they need intensive care by their mother. Both Jollie and Dompoe missed out on this. Gibbons of the same age of  as Dompoe would normally still be nursed by their mothers.
Jollie has learned to deal with the harsh environment and her behaviour is beyond her age. She knows how to take care of herself.
In Cicananga we try to take care of them as good as possible and let them recover from their ordeal. We placed Dompoe and Jollie in separate cages next to each other, so they can get adjusted to each other. We hope they can be put together in due time. If we have succeeded it will be time for their next step: the Javan Gibbon Centre in Bogor. In this centre Gibbons are being taught to cope and survive in the wild again. It is  very time consuming, but hopefully Dompoe and Jollie can be set free successfully.

Herpy the Siamang:

In May 2008 we adopted 3 Siamangs from a Rescue Centre in Gadog. They were forced to close because of insufficient funding.
Herpy is one of these Siamangs. We suspect she has had a terrible past. Of course we cannot be certain but certain clues lead us to believe so. She displays psychically deviant behavior; in certain situations she loses it and freaks out completely. This is a strong indication of abuse, or awful confinement. Apparently her arm was broken and was not properly treated. It has healed in a weird angle. Maybe it could have been broken when she was captured, because this usually happens in a brutal way. Maybe it was because of abuse by the owner. We can only guess what causes the wounds of animals brought to us.
Fortunately Herpy has a better and bigger accommodation with a lot of enrichment here in Chikananga, right next to the other Siamangs which we took from  Gadog. She is doing very well, she quite active and almost every day we hear her sing. A good sign of progress.
She will never be able to return to the wild., but luckily she has a good home now. Maybe in the future it will be possible to give her a new even better place, where she can live a relatively good life.

Hunny the Bear:

Hunny was found by Melanie in a restaurant of Jakarta city since she was a baby. Hunny was a victim of human greedy as she would be a feast of Chinese, however Melanie bought this poor animal from the first owner and brought away home. A nice girl was seemingly taking a good care of this animal in her house by giving all her love to the baby of bear. Until one day, Melanie was thinking for what she done was mistaken about keeping wild animal as a pet. Finally she tried to search the appropriate place for caring animal but not as a zoo. Cikananga Wildlife Center was chosen for the right place to care Hunny for the center provides a rehabilitation program and animal welfare. In 2005 Melanie was willing to part with adopting Hunny as long as staying in Cikananga care.
