Wanicare has received a great donation from the Triodos Foundation (the Netherlands) of 5000 Euro! This is the biggest donation that wanicare ever received and we are more than grateful for that! Therefore, we want to thank the Triodos Foundation for their trust in Wanicare and for their great support.

Wildlife internship for students at PPSC

Recently, Wanicare and AOC groene Welle (Zwolle, the Netherlands) have agreed on an opportunity for students to follow an internship at PPSC Cikananga. A great means for them to build up experience in working with wildlife and for us a way to generate help from people who are learning to work with wildlife animals and will probably give new ideas to deal with problems we are facing. Besides this, it is a nice way to generate money and get more publicity for PPSC.
In May 2010 the first two students will be welcomed and will follow an internship for 6 weeks in Cikananga to learn more about wildlife and experience working in an animal rescue centre. Hopefully it will be a great learning experience for them and more students will follow in the future.
Again a good and important step in the right direction for PPSC.

Again bad news for orang-utans Noni and Dodo

As you all could have read in the update of our website of July 2009, we were very busy to arrange the translocation of our orang-utans Noni and Dodo to the rehabilitation centre in Nyarumenteng in Kalimantan. All the paper work in order to get approval from the goverment had been done, so they were ready to go!
unfortunately we received bad news from the rehabilitation centre that Noni and Dodo were not welcome anymore, because of all sorts of reasons. We are so sad about this news: we are already trying for such a long time to find a permanent home for these amazing animals and they deserve it so much! But unfortunately we have bad luck every time!
First there were the problems with the arrangement of the translocation papers at the goverment and now the rehabilitation centre is posing problems.
It is uncertain where they will go now, but ofcourse we’ll fight as hard as we can to find a good place for them!

Two gibbons have been saved!

Saturday the 14th of November 2009 we saved two gibbons from the hands of people who live in a little village two hours from Cikananga. In this area, unfortunately, a lot of gibbons are held by people who treat the gibbons poorly. A few years ago this area was still woody and a lot of wild animals were still living there, including the gibbon. Unfortunately huge parts of the forests were cut down and the parents of many baby gibbons were killed. The little baby gibbons were sold to people living in the surrounding villages. The gibbons we found are Dompoe, a five-year old female gibbon and the little two-year old baby Jollie. Little gibbon babies like Jollie should have constant care from their mother, but Jollie sadly never had this. Her owner had fastened her with a chain on a bamboo stick and had given her a little house where she could shelter. She was totally left to her fate. Luckily we were able to take these gibbons away from their horrible circumstances and hopefully we can offer them a good future again. We will introduce Dompoe and Jollie to each other and hopefully this will work out well and they can become buddies! At the moment they are not healthy at all: they are very thin and have a bad pelt, but with good nutrition with a lot of proteins they will hopefully be much stronger soon. If they are strong enough they will be brought to the Java gibbon centre in Bogor; more of our gibbons have been brought there. In this centre they will be socialized and they will learn how to take care of themselves when brought in nature. Eventually it is our goal to release them in the national park. Hopefully Dompoe and Jollie will be stronger soon!

Great news from Stichting AAP!

In the beginning of 2009 I have written a letter to Stichting Aap with the question whether they would be interested to help Wanicare and PPSC by means of sponsoring or advice. Resit (PPSC Cikananga) and I were very happy to get the opportunity from Stichting AAP to talk about our project. We were delighted to hear that Stichting AAP decided to help us! They have given us a probationary period of six months where we have to show that PPSC can be a good and professional centre. At this moment we are working really hard to improve and after six months Stichting Aap will decide whether they want to have permanent cooperation with us. We are very happy with this opportunity and we will do everything that we can to show Stichting Aap that we can be a good, motivated and professional centre and that we are able to maintain this.

Willemijn leaves for Indonesia

Sunday the 20th of September, I will leave again to Indonesia. I will be there for three months and will work at the Cikananga animal rescue center again. Hopefully we can do even more work than has been done last period!

Great donation of medicines

Recently Wanicare has received some amazing donations of medicines: the company MERIAL (that has animal health as one of its goals) donated us omec that helps agains ecto-and endo parasites. We can use this for almost al our animals!
Moreover, the Apenheul (a zoo in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands) donated us Suprelorin that we will use to temporarily castrate our leaf monkeys. This is because we don’t want them to reproduce in our center, but this way they can still reproduce in nature (where we hope they will go some day).
I want to thank them very much for their donations!

Benefit concert a great success

The benefit concert was again a great success! Willemijn informed the visitors about all the work that has been done the last year in the animal rescue centre in Cikananga. After that Brigitte van Hagen and Jan van Wijk gave an amazing performance.
Wanicare collected a great amount of money that will be used for new projects in Cikananga.
I want to thank everyone who gave a donation.

Benefit concert

On Sunday the 13th of September there will be a benefit concert to collect money for Wanicare. Soprano Brigitte van Hagen and pianist Jan van Wijk will perform the songs that visitors can select by voluntarily giving money for Wanicare. If you are interested please send an email. Hopefully it will be just as successful as last year!

New cage for Javaan Leaf monkeys

The old cages for the Javaan Leaf monkeys (Lutungs) were not appropriate for their way of living. Normally the Lutungs spend ninety percent of their time in high trees, but because these Lutungs have lived in captivity, they have developed a different way of living and spend a lot of time on the ground. We assume that the consequence of this is that they are much more in contact with bacteria and fungus and might have caused a lot of illnes and even some of their deaths. That’s the reason why we decided to create a new cage for them. We have connected two existing cages and made them totally suitable for the living environment of the Lutungs. The cages are so big that we can place a lot more Lutungs together and create a whole new group of them. Eventually we want to release those groups in the wild.

New roof for our kasuari

Good news for our kasuari: we have made a new roof for them! The cages are in a very bad condition and the kasuari have no shelter when they are inside. First we constructed a new roof, so at least they can stay dry. We are now trying to collect money to renovate the other parts of the cages. Ultimately, it would be amazing to create greater living space for them by making new cages.

Noni and Dodo back to Kalimantan

At the moment we are arranging the translocation of our lovely orang utans Noni and Dodo.
We have been in contact with Lone Droscher-Nielsen from Orang utang Rehabilitation Centre at Nyaru Menteng and have discussed the opportunities for Noni and Dodo. In Nyaru Menteng there is place for our orang utans and Lone loves to help us by giving them a good place. Moreover, she will help us financially with their transport. Of course we are very thank ful for this. Now, we are waiting for the permit-papers from the forestry departments. As soon as we get these papers we can arrange a date to move Noni and Dodo to Nyaru Menteng.
I will miss Noni and Dodo very much, but of course we are very happy that they go back to their own habitat where they actually belong. I am sure they will be very happy there.

Gibbons to the Javan Gibbon centre

Our Gibbon couple Coen, Nuk, and their baby Willi moved to the Javan Gibbon Centre in Bogor.
Hopefully in a while they will soon be released in wild.

The sad story of Bimbi the siamang

At the 29th of March we picked up Bimbi the siamang at Sukabumi. He lived in the backyard in a very tiny cage and his condition was very bad: he had a rubber string around his neck and because of this his neck was very infected and he had difficulties with his respiration.

At Cikananga we treated his wound and a few days later it looked already much better. Only his respiration was still a problem. We tried all kinds of medicines but nothing seemed to help. Apart from this his coundition seemed to be fine. He was very happy in his new cage next to the other siamangs. He was active and was eating very well, but unfortunately after a while it was clear he wasn’t recovering as much as we’d expected: there was still something wrong. Very sadly he died after six weeks, even though he had a lot of medical care. An autopsy made clear that his whole body was full of bleedings and his troath was very damaged. We are feeling very sad because of the death of Bimbi. His future was looking so well. We had planned to bring Bimbi together with the other siamangs to a rehabilitation centre in Sumatra. Unfortunately this will never happen for Bimbi.

Presentation about work PPSC

Recently, at the 5th of March, I have given a presentation about PPSC in Nature Centre the Koppel, Vechtstraat 8 Hardenberg. It turned out to be a great succes: visitors were very enthusiastic and we had great support and a lot of publicity. I gave information and told about the work at PPSC (the reasons the animals get in the centre, the problems we have to deal with, etc.) and I showed a lot of photographs.
The foundation animal protection ‘Dierenbescherming Vechtstreek’ which invited me to give this presentation donated Wanicare (PPSC) with a great gift of 500 Euro.
Wanicare and PPSC are very greatful for this gift.
