Kaka the python is free

June 8, 2011

Python Kaka, who we received in very bad condition is back to the forest. After she recovered well from her medical problems and her appetite was good we decided that it was time to release her.
On June 8th we released her in the forest of Sagaranten nature reserve not far from Cikananga. In this area we also released our other 2 pythons (November 2010). In the afternoon we drove with 7 volunteers, vet Sabrina, Usup (keeper of Kaka) and myself to Sagaranten. A very full care as you can imagine and a lot of eyes that where focused on us and many laughing faces from local people that we passed on the road to Sagaranten. I am sure they never saw so many foreigners sitting in a back of a truck!  Haha

Release of Barn owl

June 2, 2011

Release Happily we were able to release our Barn owl (Tyto alba) Hedwig after 6 day’s staying in PPSC . We received Hedwig on April the 30th. We thought that Hedwig was held as a pet, but the story behind Hedwig was that he flew against a car, the men who hid Hedwig broth him strayed to us after the accident. So after we received this information we released Hedwig in the area of Cikananga. It is feels always so good if we can release an animal so quick after we receive them. Hedwig is free as a bird again:-)

A Sad story of two Leopard cat kittens

May 14, 2011

Kittens in the clinic

Kittens in the clinic

Friday the 13th of May was this time really an unlucky day! Two Leopard cat kittens where handed over to us. This after a men found them while he was in the forest near at Nyalindung. He thought the mother left the kittens because they were alone in the nest! He broth the two kittens to his house where he held them for one night. The next morning he didn’t know what to do with them and broth them to us! It’s so sad! The men thought he was helping the kittens, but what he really did was taking the kittens away from their mother! Probably on the moment he found the kittens the mother was looking for food. He didn’t know exactly where he found the kittens and besides that it was probably already to late to reintroduce the kittens to the mother again.
On the moment they are in our animal clinic where whey check their condition, weight and to see how they are eating. After we are sure they are healthy and eating/drinking good they will get a nice and big cage inside the park. We hope that they will grow quick so we can release them soon to their natural habitat.

Janine, one of the volunteers from the Netherlands guides the children trough the games she made specially for our EE program. Next to that she cave a presentation about animal welfare and the 5 freedom rules for animals. The students were very enthusiastic and really did their best to learn as much as possible.
